Where To Stay In Portland – For All Budgets!

After booking flights for a trip, the next thing on my list to search for is always accommodation! Okay, sometimes I get ahead of myself and start looking up cool hotels and apartments even before my flights are booked. I like knowing where I’m going to sleep. After a long day of exploring, I want the place I come “home” to for the night to be nice and comfortable.

I visited Portland over the summer (here’s my food guide!) and have a few suggestions on where to stay. From boutique luxury to budget friendly, I guarantee at least one of these will be in your price range!

If you’re looking to treat yourself and are only going to be in Portland for a short time, I 100% recommend Hotel Monaco. Maybe even 110% but let’s not get ahead of ourselves! Where to start? It’s pet-friendly, colorful, quirky, and luxurious but my FAVORITE aspect has to be their hour long wine reception with live music every evening. Any hotel that offers complimentary wine is a winner in my book.

At Hotel Monaco, you’re right in the middle of Downtown Portland. The famous Pioneer Square is only a few minutes away by foot and you can easily hop on a streetcar nearby to take you to other parts of the city. This four star hotel is housed in a former department store that opened in 1912. More than a century later, it’s still the architectural marvel that it was back then with its soaring high ceilings, picture windows, and colorful decor.

Speaking of colorful decor, the rooms compliment the lobby’s fun colors and then some! See for yourself…

The attention to detail is magnificent and beyond it’s funky style, the rooms are extremely comfortable and functional. We were kindly upgraded and had a spacious living room attached to the cozy bedroom. The bed is heavenly and it will be very hard to pull yourself out of every morning, especially on a rainy day. Is that my only complaint? The bed is TOO comfortable? Yes, let’s go with that.

Hotel Monaco is boutique luxury at its finest. They have special room rates all year round so I suggest booking through their website. I’ve seen rooms starting as low as $159 which is a great value for a four star hotel in the city center.

You know you’re staying in a fun hotel, when the tagline on their website is “Come Sleep With us!”. The Inn at Northrup Station is a unique hotel experience and I mean that in the best way possible. The people who work there are as bright and bubbly as the lobby’s interior and waste no time in pointing out the huge bowls of free candy. I had never seen so many Starbursts in my life, I almost got contact sugar high.

Starting at around $150 or less with their 15% off “Sweet Dates”, the Inn at Northrup Statation is an incredible value. Their list of complimentary amenities is a long one and it includes wifi, continental breakfast, weekly wine and beer tastings, bike rentals, and streetcar tickets… just to name a few.

If that wasn’t enough, every single room here is a suite which means you’ll have a living room, desk area, and full kitchen at your disposal. The decorative bed pillows with a Portland Streetcar on the front was a nice touch. The Inn is located right in front of a streetcar stop which was extremely convenient for us. I enjoyed being a little outside the downtown center but also close enough to reach in minutes. The surrounding neighborhood was charming and filled with boutique shops and great restaurants.

I really can’t say enough good things about the Inn at Northrup Station. I would stay again in a heartbeat. Their friendliness and funk embodies the vibe that I feel when I’m in Portland.

#3 AIRBNB – $100 OR LESS

If hotels aren’t your scene or you’re just really on a tight budget, don’t forget that Airbnb is always an option! The Portland area offers some great apartments to stay in and while you might be a little outside the city center, the price tag more than makes up for it. Plus, Portland’s public transportation is so good anyway that it’s not a huge deal.

I searched through their listings and here are two apartments I found that offer a great value…

They’re spacious, highly rated (over 100 positive reviews), and below $100!

If you haven’t used Airbnb before and are thinking of signing up, you can use my code to get $35 off your first booking! Christmas came early! πŸ™‚

*Note: I did receive a complimentary stay at Hotel Monaco and Inn at Northrup Station. However, opinions are entirely my own. I would only ever recommend something that I actually enjoyed and support!

  1. Anne says:

Hotel monaco looks amazing. I stayed in a huge Marriott I think in the edge of town when I was there for a work conference. I vaguely remember the cool downtown but would love to explore more

  2. Maddy says:

I love that you have three budgets on your review to accommodate for different people. When I went I stayed in a hostel which was both clean and well located. I want to go back one day so I’ll look into the three hotels mentioned above when booking!

  3. Natasha says:

I’ve never been to Portland but this is a great resource for when I finally do make my way there. It’s important to feature all budgets in this type of write up. πŸ™‚

  4. Clare says:

I never made it to Portland when I was in the US, but hopefully next time. I love the look of the Inn at Northrup Station, so totally my type of place πŸ™‚
